We are currently looking for a Senior Legal Counsel R&D



Scope of the job

As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will take ownership of complex legal issues in our team that supports Galapagos’ Research and Development operations. We are looking for someone who has extensive experience in drafting and negotiating complex research and development agreements. You should be able to provide high quality legal advice and can propose creative and compliant solutions to business issues.


Your role

  • act as a business partner and provide accurate legal support to the company’s Research and Development organization, including the business development group;
  • negotiate, draft and review R&D agreements of all types (including strategic collaboration agreements, license agreements, grant agreements, services agreements, clinical trial agreements, manufacturing and supply agreements);
  • interact with external stakeholders (e.g. universities, CROs, biotech companies, third party manufacturers, equipment and service providers);
  • partner with the IP team with respect to intellectual property related matters;
  • supporting routine legal matters supporting the US business;
  • assist the company in fulfilling its compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements;
  • stay up-to-date with and training others in legislation and/or compliance in this field; and
  • contribute to wider organizational goals and/or activities as assigned.

Job requirements

Who are you?

  • You have a J.D from an ABA-accredited law school with a valid license to practice law in at least one state and are eligible for admission to the NJ bar as in-house counsel. You have a minimum of seven years of experience, including experience working within the Biotech or Pharmaceutical industry.
  • You have significant experience in drafting and negotiating complex contracts, including liability, indemnification and intellectual property/patent provisions related to R&D collaborations.
  • You are a deal maker, capable of analyzing complex legal issues and you feel comfortable handling and working with tight deadlines.
  • You have demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior management and collaboratively with other corporate functions.
  • You are a well-organized, detail-oriented, and rigorous person. You have an entrepreneurial mindset and “can do” attitude. You have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team on complex projects.
  • You are capable of handling confidential information in a discreet manner and you maintain the highest ethical standards.
  • You have excellent verbal and written communications skills.
