Scope of the job

For the analysis of high content imaging and omics data, the Computational Biology team is looking forward to welcome an innovative, collaborative and accomplished Senior/Principal Scientist High Content Imaging and Data Sciences . This high-performing, dynamic and multidisciplinary team develops and applies innovative strategies for the analysis of large and heterogeneous ‘omics datasets in the context of drug discovery.


Your role

You perform state of the art scientific analyses on imaging, cell painting, and (spatial) multi-omics data, and you apply machine learning approaches to a variety of projects in the fields of oncology, inflammation, and cell therapy.

You guide teams on experimental setup, technology choices and analysis plans for answering the scientific questions using imaging, spatial (multi-)omics technologies combining in-house and public datasets.

You collaborate with various stakeholders in the therapeutic areas, computational teams, vendors, academic researchers, and within the Discovery Sciences department.

More in detail:

  • Develop and apply new data science techniques for the analysis of high content imaging data
  • Analyse high dimensional biology data in the context of drug discovery (including omics and imaging data).
  • Leverage internal and external imaging / omics / clinical and other datasets for data sciences applications.
  • Propose and shape spatial multi-omics approaches for drug discovery and cell therapy applications.
  • Scout, prioritize, scope and execute computational biology / data sciences / image analysis projects.
  • Develop and/or apply new bioinformatics tools, algorithms, machine learning or data mining techniques for the analysis of ‘omics data.
  • Specific expertise in proteomics, metabolomics or other (multi-)omics is an extra asset.
  • Apply the above techniques in a variety of projects in the core therapeutic areas of Galapagos (immunology, oncology and infectious diseases) for multiple modalities (small molecules, cell therapy, …).

Job requirements

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Data Sciences, Biology, Genetics or equivalent scientific discipline.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in data sciences or computational biology, you are an expert in image analysis and cell painting.
  • Entrepreneurial acumen; you have minimum five years of experience in drug discovery.
  • Strong scientific background and publication record with proven high levels of performance.
  • You are a team player and operate optimally in a collaborative setting.
  • Ability to innovate and to develop/apply new tools for the integrative analysis and visualization of high-dimensional datasets (omics, imaging, …).
  • Proficiency with R, Python (strong ability in other programming languages is also a plus).
  • Strong and practical experience with machine learning algorithms and data mining methods.
  • Experience with cloud computing.
  • Strong plus is additional expertise in proteomics, metabolomics, and other (multi-)omics analysis.
  • An additional background in oncology/immunology, systems biology and/or single cell genomics is a plus.
