We are looking for a Director of Data Strategy and Innovation in Basel (CH) - Mechelen (BE) or Leiden (NL)


Scope of the role:

We are seeking a Director of Data Strategy and Innovation to join our Biometrics Team at our mid-sized pharmaceutical company specializing in oncology and immunology. This role is pivotal in leveraging data-driven insights to drive strategic decisions, optimize operations, and fuel research efforts, translating complex datasets into actionable insights to advance innovative therapies and enhance patients' lives.


Your role:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive data strategy encompassing utilization, integration, harmonization, and governance to align with the company's objectives and foster innovation in drug development.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, IT, and Quality, to identify, understand, and prioritize data input, consumption, storage, output, and analytics needs.
  • Gather and define business requirements, use cases, and opportunities to drive future innovations, improvements, and informed decision-making processes.
  • Oversee and continuously enhance existing and new data storage and analytics platforms, ensuring scalability, efficiency, and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Conduct thorough reviews and assessments of databases and data systems to maintain data quality and integrity, implementing corrective measures as necessary.
  • Use advanced data analysis and data science methodologies to extract key trends and insights, optimizing strategic decision-making processes and enhancing data effectiveness.
  • Develop and execute an innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) strategy to accelerate and advance drug development processes at Galapagos.
  • Establish robust data governance and quality control measures in accordance with company policies, ensuring the accuracy, security, and compliance of data across the organization.
  • Define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), monitor the effectiveness of data-driven strategies and initiatives, and make iterative adjustments to achieve the company's ultimate goals.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in data analytics, ML, automation, AI, and biotech industry trends, providing recommendations and implementing cutting-edge solutions to drive continuous improvement.

Job requirements

Who are you?

  • Master’s degree in computer science, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing data strategies within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with a focus on oncology and immunology drug development preferred.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, data quality, and regulatory requirements, particularly in a healthcare or life sciences setting.
  • Expertise in leveraging advanced analytics techniques, AI, and ML to extract insights and drive innovation in drug development processes.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
  • A strategic mindset with a passion for driving change and innovation through data-driven approaches.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives concurrently in a fast-paced environment.
